Dodoma.

The Speaker of Tanzania's National Assembly, Job Ndugai, has banned women Members of Parliament with artificial nails and eyelashes to participate in the legislative house activities. Speaker Ndugai said that on Monday, September 10, 2018 and he also said that he will continue to receive opinions on the issue of skin bleaching.

"By the powers vested in me, I hereby ban the MPs who are wearing artificial nails and eyelashes extensions from participating in the parliament sessions and I am still discussing with experts regarding the excessive use of makeup," said the Speaker.

Speaker Ndugai gave the statement today in the parliament shortly after Deputy Health Minister, Dr. Faustin Ndugulile gave out a report on the negative effects of nail and eyelash extensions on women. Dr. Ndugulile was responding to a question from Ms Fatuma Tawfiq (Special Seats - CCM) who wanted to know the number of women who have been adversely affected by the use of these eyelashes.

Dr. Ndugulile said that approximately 700 patients are received annually at the Muhimbili National Hospital with skin problems which are caused by the use of skin bleach pills and other chemicals and that these people were at risk of getting skin cancer and other health effects.
