YOUTUBE ADDS TRENDING CHART LISTING FEATURES FOR KENYA MUSIC
Online video viewing channel YouTube has added a Trending Chart listing on its application in addition to top songs, artistes and videos in the latest upgrade of the app. The charts being rolled out in 44 countries including Kenya, the US, Japan, Germany, Brazil and the UK will feature popular and rising trends locally and globally based on the number of views on the platform.
“The new Trending Chart is updated multiple times a day to provide a unique, real time view of the hottest new music fans are enjoying,” said Chris Clark, Product Manager, YouTube Music in a post. The platform, according to The State of the Internet 2017 report, has eight million monthly Kenyan users.
The Top Songs chart highlights the number of views of a song. It will be updated weekly and is calculated by combining all official versions of a song (including the official music video, song used in user generated content and lyrics). The chart reflects how users are consuming music on the platform and the multiple ways artistes are using YouTube to share their music.
The Top Artists chart will highlight the most popular artists on YouTube, based on the total views of their entire discography — official music videos, song user generated content, live performances, remixes, lyric videos, album tracks, and collaborations.
YouTube is a key platform for local artistes who rely on the channel to launch new music and get airplay while keeping track of how well it is received by the market. Local band Sauti Sol has been known for releasing new music first on the platform, gathering millions of views within days.
